I've been playing "Star Ocean 2: Second Story"
(PSX) and FINALLY, after 70 minutes of rather bland story, I got up to the part
where you actually get to travel around and do things! The first thing I did
was rush back into the forest and get jumped but some REALLY STRONG things,
which wiped me out and set me back 20 mins. ~_~ What are such strong monsters
doing in the first forest?! (For those of you who've played the game, this is
the forest attached to Rena's village.) After redoing it (grr!), I'm a bit
farther and it seems like a good game, other than the horrendous dubbing....
After all, you can only directly control one character at a time.... Claude is
much faster than Rena, so he's always zipping around beating things up before
she can get anywhere nearby.... It's very random whether you hit or not...Well,
I suppose that's just like more traditional RPGs, isn't
it?
Other than that, I've been fooling
around with RPG Maker 2000, which is a very powerful system. You can't
customize EVERYTHING but it's flexible enough that the actual game can be molded
pretty much however you want!... But...I've found that even without needing to
design an engine or do any programming (just TONS of scripting!), RPGs still
require massive amounts of time.... One single character (4 views x 3 poses =
12 sprites) took me, I don't know.... You just have to sink a lot of time into
modelling and then none into posing! (Hardly anyone bothers to animate 3D
models THAT well, you notice?)
The
system may be powerful but it's pretty simple, too. The basics are very
accessible but if you want to do anything more difficult, you're going to have
to devote a LOT of time to
scripting.
Over the last three days, I
worked on a brand new picture just for a New Year's card. It's a pity no one
else will see it; it turned out very nice. If anyone saw it and compared it to
my CGA...they'd wonder how I can turn out some of the less good pieces in there.
^_^;;; Well, I did spend three days on it, rather than say...1 hour...I guess
I'll have to start CGing on Wednesday from now on! O_O This picture was done on
paper first, along with a colouring guide, so perhaps I have to do that for all
of them?
But what was really irritating
was that after doing half of the base colouring, I remembered I needed to find a
printer driver on my hard drive, so I opened an explorer window.... It can't
even handle opening and closing one window!... Moral of the story: don't even
dream of multi-tasking under
Windows.
...I kind of wanted some way
to interact with visitors and that's the first thing I could
find.

cold is Claude supposed to have?) Also, the battle system seems very loose.
After all, you can only directly control one character at a time. So, you have
to juggle watching where you're running along with trying to keep an eye on
others' HP! Ouch. Claude is much faster than Rena, so he's always zipping around
beating things up before she can get anywhere nearby. And the AI doesn't care
about being surrounded or not. Artificial "Intelligence," huh? I was hoping for
a more traditional system but oh, well. It's very random whether you hit or
not...Well, I suppose that's just like more traditional RPGs, isn't it?

(and even writing!) story. One single character (4 views x 3 poses = 12 sprites)
took me, I don't know. An hour? 2? Jeez. Now I know why so many RPGs prefer 3D
models. You just have to sink a lot of time into modelling and then none into

directory, so I closed it. 2 seconds later, explorer killed itself. Then, it
took kernel32 out!!!!! WHY!? Why do we have to use explorer?! And people want to
use it as a web-browser, too? It can't even handle opening and closing one
window! -_- Needless to say, I lost some of my art-colouring time. (I'd last
saved after finishing 1/4 of the base colour.) Blah. Moral of the story: don't
even dream of multi-tasking under Windows.
Let's see. 12/17, I added a Guest book. I kind of
wanted some way to interact with visitors and that's the first thing I could
find. -_-
